Turning Inward: How the Quran Teaches Us to Witness, Not Just See

A peaceful, serene scene of a A Muslim woman or man reading Quran quietly at dawn, soft light falling on the page, atmosphere of deep inner reflection and awareness. inside a cozy, spiritual and warm classic modern apartment. The soft glow of warm light reflects the inner calm and divine connection as they engage in dhikr.
Understanding "Arā" and the Deeper Layers of Divine Awareness in the Quran

When we read the Qur'an in translation, a subtle but important shift often happens:
The Qur'an, which was meant to be a living guide for the soul, begins to sound like a description of external scenes — skies, structures, events.

But the Qur'an is not simply a book of sights.
It is a manual of awakening, teaching us how to see inwardly — to witness, to realize, and to awaken to the Divine presence moving through all things.

🌸 A Deeper Look at Surah Taha (20:46)

When Allah reassures Musa (AS) and Harun (AS):

"إِنَّنِي مَعَكُمَا أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ"
"Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see."

the typical translation of "أَرَىٰ" as "I see" gives the impression of physical vision.
But the Arabic root ر-أ-ي carries a much deeper weight:

  • Witnessing with full consciousness

  • Being aware in a way that encompasses the seen and the unseen

  • Holding complete knowledge of both external events and internal states

Allah is not only watching Musa and Harun in a distant way.
He is with them, witnessing every fear, every hope, every trembling feeling within their hearts.

🌿 The Qur'an Is a Book of Internal Landscapes

Throughout the Qur'an, there is a layered movement between what we see with the eyes and what we must see with the heart:

  • The "samāʾ" (heavens) are not only the skies above — they symbolize the higher planes of our own consciousness.

  • The "ard" (earth) is not just soil — it represents the groundedness of the soul in its journey.

  • "Seeing" (ra'ā) is not only visual — it is witnessing the truth of things beyond appearances.

When the Qur'an speaks of "building the heavens," it speaks both of the outer universe and the inner vastness Allah created inside you.
When Allah says, "I see," He is also saying, "I am fully aware of every inner shift happening inside your being."

This internal view is essential to truly live by the Qur'an.

🌙 Why the Difference Matters

If we only read the Qur'an as an external account, it can feel distant:
A story of ancient peoples, skies and mountains, histories far from our modern lives.

But when we understand that every verse is a mirror for the soul’s own journey:

  • The Qur'an becomes personal.

  • Allah’s words enter our current life — our fears, our hopes, our relationships, our secret struggles.

  • Every mention of “seeing” becomes an invitation to open new levels of awareness within ourselves.

🌸 It is not about the will to reflect perfectly.
🌸 It is about turning up, turning back, submitting to the Divine light — even if we are imperfect.

The Divine names, the Divine words, act upon us at the biological, neurological, and spiritual levels simply by exposure.
Even if we don't know how to reflect yet, the Names teach us — silently, inwardly, surely.

🌟 Reflection: A Different Kind of Reading

When we recite, hear, or even just be near the Qur'an, we are participating in a sacred remodeling of our consciousness.

This is why the practice of dhikr is central:
It is not just remembering with the tongue — it is allowing the soul to be realigned again and again with Divine Reality.

Witnessing is greater than seeing.
Awareness is deeper than looking.
Transformation is happening — whether or not we "understand" it at first.

The Qur'an builds us inwardly, patiently, lovingly — if we let it.

🌸

✨ Closing Dua

اللهم اجعل القرآن ربيع قلوبنا ونور صدورنا وجلاء أحزاننا وذهاب همومنا
"O Allah, make the Qur'an the springtime of our hearts, the light of our chests, the removal of our sadness, and the release of our anxieties."
